About MPC

The Mis­souri Pre­ven­tion Cen­ter (MPC) is part of the Depart­ment of Edu­ca­tion­al, School and Coun­sel­ing Psy­chol­o­gy (ESCP) with­in the Col­lege of Edu­ca­tion at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Mis­souri (MU/Mizzou). 

The Cen­ter was estab­lished in 2007 and is locat­ed on the sec­ond floor of Lon­don Hall on Miz­zou’s cam­pus in Colum­bia, MO.

All chil­dren will live in pos­i­tive and effec­tive envi­ron­ments that fos­ter healthy devel­op­ment and well-being.

Mission Statement

The Mis­souri Pre­ven­tion Cen­ter was found­ed to devel­op, imple­ment, eval­u­ate, and dis­sem­i­nate best prac­tices for reduc­ing the preva­lence and soci­etal bur­den of youth men­tal health prob­lems through pre­ven­tion sci­ence meth­ods.

The Mis­souri Pre­ven­tion Cen­ter brings com­mu­ni­ty mem­bers and researchers togeth­er to help schools and fam­i­lies apply tech­niques that pro­mote social and aca­d­e­m­ic suc­cess. Through com­mu­ni­ty out­reach, the center’s staff pro­vides par­ent train­ing, teacher con­sul­ta­tion ser­vices as well as con­duct­ing ground­break­ing research in the field of pre­ven­tion sci­ence. There are many oppor­tu­ni­ties for stu­dents, par­ents, com­mu­ni­ty mem­bers, prac­ti­tion­ers, researchers, school admin­is­tra­tors, and teach­ers to get involved.

The Cen­ter is ground­ed in the pre­ven­tion sci­ence frame­work and also inte­grates prin­ci­ples of com­mu­ni­ty-based par­tic­i­pa­to­ry research to ensure its out­comes are mean­ing­ful and sus­tain­able with­in the com­mu­ni­ties it tar­gets.
